The McCormick Dementia Services Day Program is currently looking for:

  • One (1) part-time Recreation Assistant to work an average of 28 hours in a bi-weekly pay period
  • Part-time casual Recreation Assistant(s)

Job Description

Direct Care

  • Adult Day Program – Part-Time Recreation Assistant
  • Provide activities for clients with direction from Recreation Program Specialist.
  • Following client’s care plan, engage clients in meaningful activities, individually or in groups, considering their past and present interests and their changing abilities.
  • Respond to individual leisure needs and in consultation with Day Program Manager, adapt programs to clients’ changing needs.
  • Ensure safety of Clients while in recreation activities both inside and outside the building.
  • Provide coverage for other program and services staff during absences.
  • Assist clients with personal care needs as necessary.

Indirect Care

  • Read Communication Books in the staff area
  • Be familiar with care plans of clients and consult with the Day Program Manager or the appropriate Recreation Program Specialists about outstanding client needs
  • Work with recreation and nursing staff to determine optimal placement of client in programs where the activities are appropriate for the client’s level of functioning, and ensuring the client is with a compatible peer group
  • Evaluate effectiveness of programs, interventions, and adjust to meet client needs
  • Provide feedback to Recreation Program Specialists on unusual occurrence or client presentation/ behaviour
  • Clean up program supplies at end of shift and ensure everything is back in its proper space
  • Actively promote McCormick Dementia Services to clients, families, and in the community as appropriate.

Summary:

  • Responsible for delivering recreational programs designed by the Recreation Specialists that respond to the physical, psychological, social and spiritual well-being for residents with Alzheimer Disease and Other Dementias
  • Communicates with the Recreation Specialist in developing and updating individual care plans

Job Requirements

  • Completion of a University Degree or College Diploma in Recreation
  • Two (2) to five (5) years work experience with cognitively impaired and/or frail elderly populations providing leisure/recreation activities
  • Knowledge of symptoms associated with stages of ADRD
  • Competency in working with residents with responsive behaviours
  • CPR certification at the Heartsaver level
  • Ability and knowledge to work within a computerized environment
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills essential
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary work environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to relationship-centred care.
