We welcome people of all backgrounds and experiences and are pleased to offer customized programs that are based on a person’s needs and interests. We often find that our program members form a strong sense of belonging and make new friends along this journey. Our clients and care partners have remarked that attendance at the day program becomes something that our clients genuinely look forward to and are so energized by each day.
We invite you to explore our program and learn for yourself all it has to offer. Please feel free to contact one of our social workers to answer any of your questions. They will help guide you through the application process.
At McCormick, we focus on current strengths and abilities and adjust our programming to suit our clients as they follow their dementia journey. Our focus is on enhancing the quality of life for everyone in our care.
If you have questions, are looking for resources, or need support, please contact us.
Referrals to the Care Partners Support Programs can be made by calling McCormick Dementia Services directly (519-439-9336) and speaking to a social worker.
All referrals to the day program go through Home and Community Care South West Local Health Integration Network at 1-800-811-5146. Anyone can call and request a referral to the day program. A case coordinator will meet with the client and their care partner and complete a standardized assessment form (Resident Assessment Instrument or RAI). The case coordinator determines eligibility for the day program. Once approved, the case coordinator will send the assessment document to McCormick Dementia Services.
Once the referral is received, the McCormick Dementia Services social worker contacts the family and arranges an appointment for the applicant and their care partner(s). This visit gives us a chance to gather more information and allows the applicant to see the day program area and meet some of the staff. The applicant spends at least an hour in the day program, while the care partner(s) provides social/emotional/recreational information to the social worker and complete(s) other documents. During this process, the McCormick Dementia Services team, the client and his/her care partners together decide on the appropriateness of the program for the applicant. Days are chosen and space is offered if available or the applicant’s name is placed on the wait list. The whole process can take up to two hours.
Transportation to the day program is available from the BGC (formerly known as the Boys’ and Girls’ Club) seniors transit service, which shuttles clients within the London city boundary. This service is arranged by the McCormick Dementia Services administrative assistant and confirmed by calling the applicant’s contact person. The family may choose to transport the day program client, if desired.
Some of the documents requiring completion can be downloaded and completed in advance of the appointment. Others will be presented during the appointment. Documents available to download include:
McCormick Dementia Services offers the largest day program of its kind in Ontario. We have a strong history and an ongoing commitment to delivering the highest quality programs and services to clients in our day program, overnight respite program and care partner support programs.
Formerly known as Alzheimer Outreach Services, McCormick Dementia Services is governed by the McCormick Care Group, an organization that has served London since 1874 and is located at McCormick Home. It is funded by the Ministry of Health through Ontario Health West and supported by Day Program client user fees. Additional funding support is provided by the McCormick Care Foundation. The Foundation welcomes donations from the community.
The McCormick Dementia Services team is a dedicated group of professionals and volunteers working closely with families, care partners and other service providers including physicians to form a care team that is focused on client needs. Learn more about our team.

At McCormick Dementia Services, we provide support groups and services for the changing needs of our clients. We also recognize the importance of taking care of the care partner. Our care partner support services are designed to assist care partners in their important role, and form a strong component of the McCormick Dementia Services program. Support is available to everyone regardless of whether or not their loved one attends the McCormick Day Program.
Services include counselling, telephone consultation, advocacy, information, referral and support groups. Registered social workers provide a variety of group sessions during the day and evening. Care Partner Support Services offer many opportunities for care partners to seek and obtain information, guidance and support. Appointments with the social workers can be arranged by calling or e-mailing us. Support groups require pre-registration and registration confirmation prior to attending the groups.
For appointments or registration information, call us by phone at (519) 439-9336.
Because care partners may occasionally need to have their person in community care for a period of time, we offer overnight respite care. You can rest-assured that your person will be well taken care of as you take some much needed time for yourself.
We offer overnight respite care seven days a week. You can choose to have your person stay overnight with us for one, three, four or seven nights. Care partners may pre-book their respite stay two months in advance. Client names may also be added to the waiting list for a second weekend in the same month. Applicants booking their first respite stay for the month will get priority. The maximum length of an overnight stay is seven nights.
Once they arrive, the client will be directed to the programming room most suitable for them and their particular interests. Additionally, with staff supervision, clients are welcome to enjoy our secured garden space. Clients engage in person-centred recreational programs until lunch. Programming varies, and may include art, crafts, music, word puzzles, trivia, exercises, physical games, table games, Montessori activities, helping tasks and digital programming.
Recreational programming continues into the evening until 8:00 p.m.
Clients are supported 24 hours per day by our nursing staff, which includes a registered practical nurse and a personal support worker. In the evenings, more relaxing programming is provided, which may include watching movies or television.
Overnight respite clients are served breakfast at 8:00 a.m, lunch at noon, and dinner at 5:00 p.m. Snacks are provided in the afternoon. All meals are served by our nursing staff. Modified textures (regular, minced, soft, puree) and fluids (regular, thickened) are available.
Our nursing team is available at all times to provide personal care assistance when required. This assistance includes everything from supervision in the washroom to full mechanical lifts for transfers and product changes. Our nursing staff take pride in ensuring clients receive additional grooming attention during their stay, including cleaning, trimming and polishing finger nails; brushing and styling hair; and shaving men’s faces, for those who are interested. Personal care products, including nail trimmers, are labelled to avoid cross-contamination. If they are available, we also offer additional services, such as salon services. Please ask us about these additional services when you book your time with us.
All client medication and supplements must be stored with our nursing staff during their stay. These medications, including over-the-counter medications, must be prescribed by a physician/nurse practitioner, and must be in their original labelled bottles or a blister pack. Our staff are not permitted to administer medications that are not in the accepted packaging. Any clients requiring the use of oxygen therapy must also provide physician orders or the oxygen supplier instructions for its use.
While clients are staying in respite care, they are situated in our McCormick Day Program space. We do not use long-term care rooms for our overnight clients. Clients have their own personal room for sleeping, as well as access to an adjacent washroom with a toilet and sink. Clients will be participating in recreational programming during the day and have access to recliner chairs in a spacious area for additional rest and relaxation, if desired.
Throughout the respite stay, thorough cleaning is performed, including high touch points, such as light switches, table tops, chairs, railings, washrooms and program materials. All staff are specially trained in infection prevention and control practices.
Clients who are currently attending the McCormick Day Program on site are eligible for overnight respite. Clients attending other day programs are not eligible for our overnight stay. Also available is our hospital bed, which may be required for some clients for safe transfers, special care and proper positioning. If you are interested in booking a respite stay, please contact our administrative assistant for availability.
If a client develops symptoms of illness during their respite stay, the emergency contact/primary care partner will be contacted to pick up the client. The client will be immediately isolated from other clients until their ride arrives. Thorough cleaning of the area will be performed. Care partners will be instructed to return home, self-isolate and contact their primary health care provider or public health unit to discuss their symptoms.
Clients cannot attend the day program for 10 days from testing positive for COVID-19, and for seven days after being in close contact with someone who has tested positive. Clients are not able to attend the day program when displaying an symptoms of any illness, including respiratory or enteric symptoms. We consult with the public health unit for specific advice on what control measures should be implemented to prevent the potential spread of any infections and how to monitor other clients and staff who may have come in contact with an infected person.

Living with dementia does not mean that quality of life no longer matters. Our day program provides a diverse and stimulating range of activities based on the personal needs and backgrounds of our clients. In addition, our program benefits care partners by giving them a sense of reassurance that their loved one is well taken care of so that they can have some often much-needed time for themselves. Our clients are involved in small and large group programs based on their interests and abilities, where the goal is always to have clients succeed in whatever activity they choose to participate.
Since 1985, our highly experienced team of professionals has been delivering a high quality day program to individuals with dementia and has become the largest program of its kind in Ontario. We not only understand dementia and the challenges it can present, we make it possible for clients and care partners to achieve an enhanced quality of life despite a dementia diagnosis.
Each client’s social-recreational history is obtained upon admission and is used to guide the staff in developing a relationship-centred, individualized program.
